I Inherited Fear

Moving Image, 2023

I Inherited Fear draws on a memory passed down to me by my mother, set during the early years following the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. At a time when public life was tightly controlled, even minor deviations in appearance could provoke sudden and violent consequences.
The work centres on an incident in which my parents were forced to hide after a warning that authorities were approaching, targeting individuals for small infractions such as clothing.
Although I did not experience this moment directly, it persists as a form of inherited memory. The piece explores how fear is transmitted across generations — not as a single event, but as a constant, underlying condition that shapes behaviour, perception, and the body.
